Can't Cry for THESE Farmers

I made my round over to the website at WBIR this morning - as usual.  At one point - I felt the adrenalin hike.  And I don’t think it was the caffeine in the coffee.

It was a headline: - Cold winter takes toll on nation's tomato crops forcing rise in prices

The story was put out there on the feed by NBC News.  And it made me so angry.  We’re supposed to feel sorry for these farmers.  I refuse to feel that way.  I have no pity for idiots that - actually - know better.

Don't worry - this was last year!

Common sense.  Do you grow roses during winter?  Why not?

While hiding behind that stage curtain - all the grocery store chains laugh and get excited when this crap happens.  They got their true hope out of the buy.  They get to jack the prices up - even more.

And more idiots will buy them - still.

We - as a nation - continue to be sucked through that never-ending vacuum of “ gotta have it NOW ! “ - even in the middle of an economic meltdown - whatever the price - even at the expense of our dignity.

There is a reason why tomatoes can be ruined this time of year in the northern hemisphere.

It’s WINTER.  You don’t grow tomatoes in - WINTER - not even under cold frames - not even inside hot houses!  The climate is changing.  The Earth is evolving.  Hot houses - which really are not hot - aren't gonna work!  You’re only asking for trouble.

I thank God for having friends as smart as me - that grow their own...
and at the proper time set by Mother Nature, Herself!

Tomato Farmers asked for trouble.  They got it.  The grocery store chains will jack up the price.  A different wave of Idiots will buy them - regardless.  And do you think the grocery store chains will give the farmers any bonus out of the windfall?

Anybody see the joke here - yet?  Because what some may not know is - this is where the federal tax dollars came in during the past.  Farmers could grow tomatoes in the winter - let them die - file a form with the government - and the Feds hand over a lottery check!  They actually made more profit from a failed crop - thanks to our tax money!  We paid them to screw up farming!!!  How cool is that!!!

The only difference in this moment - we're in the middle of an economic meltdown.  And now - they want us all to cry for them.  When in the end - the true problem is - the grocery store chains stand to come out with insane profits from the mess.  But this time - the Farmer's windfall crop failure will not see that lottery check!

My tomato plants from last year!

I’m not buying one more tomato from any grocery store chain.  I’ll grow my own.

You make some very valid points. I try to make it a point to eat what we grow in season. I won't say that I "never" buy a tomatoe or lettuce from the store in the winter but it is very seldom.

I do have some "tomatoes" in my refrigerator right now that a restaurant owner gave Mike when Mike deliverd potatoes (that we grow) to the restaurant. They taste like cardboard and can't really be considered a tomatoe anyway! ;-)

I always enjoy your posts, even when I don't leave a comment.
